Abby Wambach is former American soccer player and coach. She’s an Olympic gold medalist and FIFA World Cup champion. Mary Abigail Wambach was born on June 2, 1980 in Rochester, New York. Her parents are Pete and Judy and she has six siblings, Matthew, Patrick, Peter, Andrew, Laura and Beth. She’s 5ft 11in tall and plays the forward position.
Wambach grew up in the suburb of Pittsford and attended Our Lady of Mercy High School in Brighton. She was highly competitive in various sports including basketball and soccer. Wambach continued her education at the University of Florida on a full athletic scholarship. She played for the Florida Gators Women’s soccer team from 1998-2001. She led the Gators to their first NCAA championship as a freshman in 1998. Wambach earned numerous honors and accolades during her time with the Gators. She’s their all-time leading scorer with 96 goals and was inducted into the University of Florida Athletic Hall of Fame in 2012.
CAREER
Wambach was selected by the Washington Freedom with the second overall pick in the 2002 WUSA Draft. She played in 37 games and scored 23 goals from 2002-2003. She was also named Rookie of the Year in 2002. The WUSA folded days before the 2003 FIFA Women’s World Cup and Wambach was left without a club. She rejoined the Washington Freedom in 2009 following the establishment of the Women’s Professional Soccer league. She scored 21 goals from 2009-2010 and was named player-coach in 2011 after the club rebranded to MagicJack. She later played for the Western New York Flash from 2013-2014.
Wambach made her international debut with the United States national team in 2001. The team finished third place at the 2003 FIFA Women’s World Cup followed by gold at the 2004 Olympics. Wambach made a total of four Women’s World Cup appearances and competed in two Olympics tournaments. She was named FIFA World Player of the year in 2012 and won the FIFA World Cup title in 2015.
